Set in immediate post-war Vienna, full of unemployed former imperial bureaucrats and enough socialists to earn the city the nickname of “Red Vienna,” a veteran haunted by the war is murdered, and it’s up to Inspector August Emmerich to solve the crime and restore a small bit of order to the chaos reigning around him. This first-in-a-series mystery should please fans of Philip Kerr and Jonathan Rabb.
