Touch of Evil

Mediterranean noir is well represented by Europa Editions.  The house has a real find in Massimo Carlotto, whose raw stories about Italian criminals in unhealthy political climates are about as gritty as they come and whose fictional account of his own experiences running from a murder charge, THE FUGITIVE (Europa, paper, $14.95), has just been released in a translation by Antony Shugaar.  Another noir star on the Europa list, Jean-Claude Izzo, mourns the corruption of his native city in the corrosive novels of his Marseilles Trilogy.  SOLEA (Europa, paper, $14.95), the final book in this pitch-black series, will be available in June.
